Is Your New Front Load Washing Machine Smelling Bad? How To Get It Smelling Fresh Again

Construction & Contractors Blog

Even washing machines need a good washing, especially if you have been using one for quite a while without giving it a bath. If you have a front load washing machine and it is smelling bad, below are some tips on getting it smelling fresh once again.

Clean the Rubber Gasket and Dispenser

The first thing to clean on your front load washing machine is the rubber gasket that you will find on the front of the washer. This gasket becomes very dirty because it accumulates everything that you wash, from water to scum. Mold can even build up inside the basket over time.

To clean this area, fill a spray bottle with 50/50 water and white vinegar. Then run your finger around the gasket to remove any gunk that is likely there. You may want to put on a pair of rubber gloves first. Once it is clear, spray the vinegar solution in the gasket and wipe around the gasket with a damp cloth.

When the gasket is clean, remove the detergent dispenser and wash it using liquid dish soap in your kitchen sink.

Clean the Washer

Set the washer to hot water and at the highest level. Put two cups of cleaning vinegar into the detergent dispenser and run the washer through a full cycle. Cleaning vinegar is not the same as your standard vinegar so make sure it says "cleaning" on the bottle.

When this cycle is finished, put about a half cup of baking soda into the drum and run it again set on the hottest temperature for a full cycle. The baking soda will remove odors that are inside the washer. When this cycle is finished, wipe the inside drum with a damp cloth.

Keep the Washer Clean

There are things you can do to keep your washer smelling nice and fresh. When you finish washing a load of clothes, leave the door of the washer open so it can dry out. If you have small children, however, do not do this as they could climb into the washer and get trapped inside of it.

Do not leave clothes in the washer when they are finished washing, as the wetness from the clothes can cause the drum and your clothes to smell bad. Turn on the beeper on the washer if it is not on to remind you when it is time to get the clothes out.

The detergent you use can also help with this. Only use detergents that are made for HE (high-efficiency) machines. These detergents will have this on the front of the package or on the side. You will see a "HE" symbol.

Contact a washer repair company if your washer continues to smell bad. They can determine if there is something wrong with the machine causing the smell.
